Château Gruaud-Larose, owned by the Merlaut family, is a wine estate located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, in Gironde. It extends over 82 hectares of vines planted on a superb gravelly hillock and produces about 450,000 bottles per year.
The label leaves no room for ambiguity by proclaiming: "The king of wines, the wine of kings". And there is nothing usurped in this century-old self-proclamation. Gruaud-Larose develops a power that some people reproach him for. The wine, it is true, is ten years overdue. The purchase by the Taillan group in 1997 completed and refined the winemaking methods that now make Château Gruaud-Larose a wine that has gained in finesse. The talents of Georges Pauli, the winemaker, have allowed a faultless course over the last thirty years, just marrying, by correcting them somewhat, the small years. It is an exceptional wine.
Château Gruaud Larose, Second Grand Cru Classé of Bordeaux in 1855 in the Saint-Julien appellation, is a wine made from a blend of 4 different grape varieties:
Château Gruaud Larose has kept its original size and its mythical red wine is produced from vines that are on average 43 years old.
The result of a long winegrowing tradition always focused on the search for excellence, Château Gruaud Larose offers a wine of legendary finesse for tasting.
The wine is aged in French oak barrels (90% new) for 18 months. A meticulous production providing an exceptional wine. The wines of Château Gruaud Larose perfectly combine generosity and concentration. Wines of Saint-Julien with a superb potential of guard.
Château Gruaud Larose also produces a Second Wine since 1979: "Sarget de Gruaud Larose". Its second wine benefits from the same care given to its great wine. It is also aged in barrels. Its quantity varies from one year to another but represents on average 150 000 to 200 000 bottles.
The best bottles of Château Gruaud-Larose are available for purchase on Comptoir des Millésimes.
