Château Haut-Batailley, is a 22-hectare wine-growing estate located in Pauillac in the Gironde. Located in AOC Pauillac, it is classified as Cinquième Grand Cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification.
Emblematic figure of the Pauillac appellation, the name of the Château Haut-Batailley would be nothing more than a derivative of the word "Bataille (battle)" in reference to the battles fought on the estate during the Hundred Years' War. The wine-growing activity began in the 18th century when Daniel Guestier acquired the estate in 1816. He employed considerable means such as the extension of the estate, the renovation of the cellars and the château. These efforts have borne fruit as the quality of the wine has improved significantly.
In 1932, the Borie family became the owners. Marcel and Francis, the Borie brothers, reorganized the vineyard in order to divide it in two. Thus Francis became the owner of Château Haut-Batailley and Marcel de Château Batailley.
The vineyard was expanded with the purchase of the Château Duhart Milon in 1939. Since 1998, Francois Xavier Borie has been at the head of the family estate. In 2009, a total renovation of the vineyard was undertaken with positive and significant results on the quality of the wine.
The Château Haut-Batailley embarked on a new adventure in 2017 when the Cazes family took over the reins of the estate, promising to take the utmost care of it. The collaboration already seems very fruitful.
The estate is located at the south-western end of the appellation, a few kilometres from Pauillac, on deep Garonne gravel soils, and offers a blend of 3 different grape varieties for tasting:
The production is traditional in Château Haut-Batailley. The vinification is carried out in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats before the wine is matured for an average of 20 months in 40% new oak barrels.
A must, Château Haut-Batailley keeps getting better and better. This médoc Grand Cru is predestined for one of the most radiant future among the most beautiful references of the Pauillac appellation.
The vines also give birth to a second wine: "La Tour d'Aspic".
