Haut-Médoc is a French red wine produced in the southern half of the Médoc vineyard. In the south of the Gironde, the AOC Haut-Médoc includes 6 appellations in total, namely : Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux, and two unclassified; Listrac-Médoc and Moulis-en-Médoc. Gravel is common in Haut-Médoc and therefore the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety is important. However, significant reserves of clay and other soil types are also interspersed in the region, making the Cabernet less homogeneous than in the four communes of the village. As a result, the wines of the Haut-Médoc have the potential to present different flavours, occupying very prestigious terroirs and encompassing the majority of the Crus Classés, and most of them are wines for laying down.
The robe is intense and a mixture of ruby, burgundy and garnet can be seen. It shows a solid constitution of the wine. During ageing, we can see that the robe keeps its lively colour. The bouquet reveals notes of blackcurrant, coffee, grilled flavour, and a mixture of spices. We find ripe red fruits that combine perfectly with wood, vanilla and burnt flavour to share an extraordinary whole.
In their youngest years, the Haut-Medoc wines show an important tannic side: some wines should not be tasted for several years. Thereafter, there is a certain supple and fleshy progression. Similar aromas on the nose and mouth. Of course, everything depends on the geographical location, but it is important to know that all the Haut-Médoc wines see their palette constantly progress and become richer with time.
