Domaine Henri Jayer
"A great wine is made in the vineyard, not in the cellar" - Henri Jayer
A pioneer of Pinot Noir, Henry Jayer is credited with introducing important innovations in the methods of vinification of Burgundy wines. The estate's wines enjoy a phenomenal reputation. This reputation can be explained by two factors: the low yield with an annual production of only 3500 bottles and the very particular viticultural methods of the winemaker, Henri Jayer.
Located in the Côte d'Or, Henri Jayer has worked miracles with the tiny 1.01 hectare parcel of Cros Parantoux in the Vosne Romanée appellation. He has dynamited the plot in order to discover the very essence of the terroir.
To achieve such a high level of quality, the selection of the grapes is very precise since only the perfect grapes are selected for production. He is opposed to the use of chemicals in the vineyard in order to let the terroir and the vine express themselves to the maximum.
For a time, the estate's bottle of Richebourg 1978 remained the most expensive bottle in the world ever sold. Since his death in 2006, it is Emmanuel Rouget, his nephew, who continues to run the estate with a savoir-faire and passion that was passed on to him by Henry Jayer.
