Tasted by Monica Larner in 2020: "Le Macchiole's three graces are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc respectively). Of these three top-notch releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. It's a straightforward expression of the grape that carefully strips away some of the dusty or mineral aromas before opening up to determined dark fruits, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. The oak is quite present, but it blends beautifully with the natural intensity and rich concentration of this warm vintage. More unexpected are those lovely tones of lilac, blue flower and anise that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart..."
