Tasting notes: The Châteauneuf du Pape XXL is about 75% Grenache, the rest being a mix of authorised varieties. It incorporates "a lot" of whole bunches and was aged in demi-muid. This is a magnificent vintage from Christophe Sabon. Classic aromas of crushed stone, pencil shavings and baking spices start it off on a terrific note, while ripe raspberries and stone fruit unfold on the palate; it is a powerful wine. Contrary to what the name suggests, this wine has incredible finesse, elegance and length. It is actually more impressive for these qualities than for its size, power and richness. It will certainly open up after a few years in the cellar. Try it from 2025.
