Situated to the east of the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, Château La Mondotte is a 4.5 hectare vineyard benefiting from all the natural assets conducive to the production of a great wine.
What are the specificities of Château La Mondotte?
La Mondotte was bought in 1971 by Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg, Stephan von Neipperg's father. This vineyard was obtained at the same time as the other estates that form the core of the Saint Emilion vineyard of the von Neipperg family: the Château Canon La Gaffelière, Le Clos de l'Oratoire and the Château Peyreau. In the Côtes de Castillon, they own the Château d'Aiguilhe. Today the property is owned and managed by Stephan von Neipperg.
However, while the other estates on the right bank of the von Neipperg family were producing strong wine in 1989, La Mondotte only began to show its potential in 1996. A delay explained in part by the need to spend time in the vineyards of Canon La Gaffelière.
La Mondotte's viticultural practices have become very close to the techniques of biodynamic agriculture, with the aim of having a vineyard that is entirely self-sufficient and organically grown. And it is in 2014 that the Château La Mondotte has been certified 100% organic.
In September 2012, La Mondotte was ranked premier grand cru classé. La Mondotte is one of the only two wines to have obtained the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé, after being a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru not previously classified.
The Bordeaux vineyard of La Mondotte offers a wine tasting composed of:
The terroir is predominantly silty clay and clay-limestone with strong limestone deposits in the soil. An impressive number of old vines which are on average more than 50 years old give birth to a wine of excellence.
To produce the wine of La Mondotte, the fruits are sorted before and after destemming. The grapes are never crushed. Fermentation of the whole berries takes place in temperature-controlled, open-top French oak vats for an average of 29 days. La Mondotte wine is always produced from very low yields. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak barrels for an average of 18 months before bottling.
