Château Lafite Rothschild 1985
Pauillac - Premier Grand Cru Rated
Cellaring : Ripe, drink now, or collect.
Tasting notes : Garnet colour; a nose of cedar, with hints of vanilla; very concentrated; shows elegant and stylish flavours of blackcurrant and tea.
- Lafite Style: Lafite Rothschild produces an elegant style of Pauillac. Its qualities include cedar, blackcurrant, tobacco, truffle, lead pencil and spice, as well as the freshness and purity of dark red fruits. It is perhaps the most refined of the First Growths. Lafite Rothschild has nothing to do with power or concentration. Rather, it focuses on the fullness of its flavours and aromatic nuances. This wine, like all first growths, takes decades to mature. It has a remarkable capacity to resist.
- The vineyard: 112 hectares of Chateau Lafite Rothschild is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. This shows a moderate change in the vineyard. While Cabernet Sauvignon has remained at 70%, today there is slightly more Merlot, less Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has been added since the mid-1990s. However, it is important to remember that Chateau Lafite Rothschild is almost always 90% Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Located at the northernmost point of the Pauillac appellation, only the small stream of the Jalle de Breuil separates the vineyard from the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild could be divided into 3 sections, with 100 separate parcels in total.
