The château Larcis-Ducasse, owned by the Gratiot Alphandéry family, has been running the vineyard for a very long time. During the 16th century, the bottles of Larcis-Ducasse were already highly appreciated and reputed. Traditionally, Larcis Ducasse was considered a property with an exceptional terroir but constantly "under-performing". This has changed, mainly thanks to the talents of a new winemaking team led by Nicolas Thienpont (reputed Château Pavie Macquin) and Stéphane Derenoncourt who have managed to unleash the potential of this wine giant.
The estate is located on one of the most beautiful strips of Bordeaux terroir - the Côte Pavie in St Emilion. Here, this 25-hectare property adjoins the 1er Grand Cru Classé, Château Pavie. The vines are planted on an eclectic range of soils: alluvium, clayey sands, clayey limestone and limestone. As might be expected in this part of the world, the vines are predominantly Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 75%). The new viticultural team arrived in 2002 and since then the wines have intensified.
The wines are rich and opulent in texture with ripe black berries, anise, spices and minerality. They have the ability to age and improve with time. An excellent value for money for a right bank estate of high quality.
When to drink Chateau Larcis Ducasse? It will be much better with at least 10-15 years of ageing in good vintages. Younger vintages can be decanted for 2-3 hours or more.
