Pomerol
100/100 Parker
When to drink this wine: A mature vintage
Tasted in 1998: ‘Although the 1947 Cheval Blanc is widely regarded as the “wine of the century” by collectors, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol also deserves a share of the title. Giving points to such a wine brings to mind Shakespeare's observation that ‘comparisons are odious’. This wine is ‘out of the ordinary’, to say the least. If I only had one Bordeaux to drink, the Latour a Pomerol 1961 would be at the top of my list. Its phenomenal richness, precision and balance are breathtaking. A saturated dark purple colour, with no sign of amber, orange or rust, the nose offers extraordinarily rich and intense aromas of jammy plums, blackcurrants, liquorice and truffles. Port-like, with remarkable viscosity and thickness, and a finish that lasts over a minute, this wine is in a class of its own. Even more than the 1961 Petrus and 1961 Latour (two perfect wines), it is phenomenal. Given its youth (it's the least mature wine of the vintage), it has the potential to last another 20 to 30 years.’
