Château Léoville Poyferré 1974
Saint-Julien - 2ème Grand Cru Classé
Ageing potential : Can be drunk now
Do you know Château Léoville Poyferré ?
The 80 hectares of vineyards of Saint Julien du Léoville Poyferre are planted to 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Keep in mind that these are only the vines used for Leoville Poyferre and not Moulin Riche.
This marks a considerable change in the vineyards since the early 1960s. At that time, the percentage of Merlot was much higher, perhaps close to 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon about 30%, while the rest of the vineyard was planted to Cabernet Franc. The vines are on average 45 years old. They also have some old Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were planted in the 1940s.
Interestingly, since there is very little Petit Verdot in the Léoville Poyferre vineyards, from time to time, when the Petit Verdot is ripe enough, these grapes can also be used for Léoville Poyferre. The terroir is mainly gravel, with some sand, clay and limestone in the soil.
