The abbey of Lérins is part of a long monastic tradition of more than 16 centuries. The island of Saint Honorat lies between the azure blue of the bay of Cannes and the turquoise blue of the Mediterranean waters. The history of this luxuriant vegetation has been written for more than 1600 years. The first monastic community settled on the island in 405, alongside Saint Honorat d'Arles and his companions. Today, the twenty-one Cistercian monks live on the island according to the Rule of Saint Benedict.
They continue this monastic tradition and live modestly from the fruit of their labour, the production of wines and liqueurs. They thus apply the Benedictine doctrine "ora et labora": pray and work. The origin of the vineyard on the island of Saint Honorat dates back to the Middle Ages, although it is believed that it existed even before then for the needs of the Eucharist. However, it was not until the 1990s that the vineyard was professionally re-launched with the discovery of five micro-terroirs on the island.
