Château Lynch Bages is ranked 5ème Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification of the Pauillac AOC. It is one of the best known estates of the Médoc. The production is 420.000 bottles. Since 1973, it has belonged to the enigmatic Jean-Michel Cazes and is now run by his son, Jean-Charles. The vineyards of Lynch Bages are superbly located on a plateau west of the town of Pauillac, in the small village of Bages.
The 90 hectares of vines (red: Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Merlot 15%, Cabernet Franc 10%) lie on deep gravel beds on limestone. For the reds, the fermentation is temperature-controlled with significant "pumping over the wine" to ensure concentration and depth of colour. A special system of pipes transfers the wine from the vats to the oak barrels (60% new) where it is matured for 15 months.
Lynch Bages can be surprisingly sweet and approachable when it's young. However, when mature, it develops a succulent richness and a divine bouquet of minty blackcurrant and cigar boxes. As Oz Clarke says, "Lynch Bages is impressive at five, beautiful at ten, and irresistible at twenty". The style of wine at Château Lynch Bages combines power, concentration, style and charm. Midway between traditional and modern styles, the wine is best when concentrated, offering ripe blackcurrant, tobacco, wet earth and truffle flavors with firm tannins.
The wine ages extremely well. In the best vintages, 30, 40 or 50 years of evolution are possible. Lynch Bages is a wine for wine lovers, as it often needs 15 to 20 years in the best vintages to give the best of itself.
