Domaine Marcel Deiss is a medium sized estate (27 hectares) located in Bergheim near Ribeauvillé in Alsace. It is a deeply rooted family estate since the Deiss ancestors can be found in the village in 1744. Under the direction of Jean-Michel Deiss, who has been running the winery since 1981, the vineyards have been gradually transformed into organic cultivation and then cultivated using the biodynamic method since 2003. Marcel Deiss' wines are more appreciated for their terroir differentiation than for their varietal characteristics, and Jean-Michel Deiss' passion for this expression of terroir led him to reconsider the monoculture system considered the rule in Alsace.
Marcel Deiss' wines are unique in Alsace because they are not labelled by grape variety but are labelled by the specific vineyard. This allows the unique characters of each vineyard to express themselves in each wine. Deiss seeks to express each wine with three factors: the grape variety, the vintage and the terroir.
“Just about any French vineyard owner will talk terroir given the opportunity, but no one argues the case for terroir more passionately than Marcel Deiss.” Robert Parker
