When Jérôme Bressy created the Domaine Gourt de Mautens in 1996, Rasteau was a quite obscure village in the Côtes-du-Rhône, but with the old vines of his family and their naturally low yields, he has drawn attention (with André Roméro at Domaine la Soumade) to the potential of the Rasteau terroirs.
Gourt de Mautens takes its name from the local dialect. Gourt is "a place where water flows" and Mautens is the word for "storm or bad weather." Together, it's where the water flows when it storms. This unique part of the landscape ensures that even in the driest years, the vines on the property have plenty of moisture in the deep clay subsoil. The upper soil is chalky clay and rocky and marl. Low in nutrients, these soils give very low yields, on average 10-15 hl / ha. Favouring an integrated approach to cultivation and respectful of the traditions of his ancestors, Jerome's vineyards are surrounded by olive and fruit trees. Most of his vines are pruned at the head and are between 30 and 100 years old. There is a complex array of aspects and orientations matching a wide choice of varieties including Grenache, le Carignan, le Mourvèdre, la Syrah, la Counoise, le Cinsault, le Vaccarèse, le Terret Noir, le Grenache Blanc, le Grenache Gris, Bourboulenc, Clairette, Picardan, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, Picpoul Blanc, Picpoul Gris. If a vine dies, it is uprooted and replaced by massal selection adapted to the site, thus preserving the genetic diversity of the vineyard. Thus, when the appellation decided to severely limit the varieties allowed in AOC Rasteau, Jérôme decided to leave rather than change the composition of his wines.
