Château La Mission-Haut-Brion is the greatest Graves wine after Haut-Brion and in some vintages it is considered the greater of the two. La Mission-Haut-Brion is located just opposite Haut-Brion, in the commune of Talence, in the southern suburbs of Bordeaux. Since 1983, both properties have been under the same owner, the vines of Domaine Clarence Dillon SA. It extends over 26 hectares and produces 105,000 bottles a year. In the AOC Pessac-Léognan, it is found as grand cru classé in the 1953 Graves wine classification.
La Mission-Haut-Brion (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) rests on a large bank of gravel (up to 18 metres deep in places) strewn with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, then aged in oak barrels (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, woody and powerful and require at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they can be approached.
