Château Monbousquet located in Saint-Emilion is a wine that is worth the journey. It is classified Grand Cru in 2006 and receives a comment from Robert Parker: "Every Monbousquet produced under the leadership of Gérard Perse is exceptional."
The Château Monbousquet is a Saint-Emilion estate with a long history in the appellation dating back to 1540, when Monbousquet belonged to François de Lescours, before becoming the property of the De Carles family. The Château remained in the hands of the De Carles family for nearly 150 years.
At the end of the Second World War, the Querre family bought the Château Monbousquet. Thanks to their efforts, Château Monbousquet began to produce better wines.
In 1993, Gérard Perse and Chantal Perse bought the estate. The Château Monbousquet was the first vineyard bought by Gerard Perse.
Shortly after obtaining the Château Monbousquet, Gérard Perse undertakes the renovation of the estate. The entire 32 hectares of the Monbousquet vineyard has been analysed and drained. Then, they completely rebuilt the wine-making facilities and cellars of the Château Monbousquet. Gérard Perse has also built a brand new barrel ageing cellar.
Today the Château happens to be the private home of Gerard Perse and Chantal Perse and the rest of the Perse family.
His daughter Angélique and her husband, Henrique Da Costa, eventually took over all Perse's wine estates, including Château Pavie, Château Bellevue Mondotte and Château Pavie Decesse.
The Monbousquet Saint Emilion vineyard, covering 32 hectares, is composed of:
The average age of the vines is 40 years. The terroir of sand, clay and gravel is not the best in Saint-Emilion. The vineyard can be divided into three parts. For the red wines, there is more sand and clay in the north and more gravel with sand in the south.
The intentional search for low yields is a way to increase concentration and improve quality.
To produce the wine of Château Monbousquet, the vinification is carried out in a combination of small temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and French oak vats.
The wine is aged in 60% new French oak barrels for an average of 20 months.
The vineyard also produces a dry white Bordeaux wine from one hectare of vines planted on sandy-clay and gravelly soils. The Château Monbousquet Blanc offers for tasting a wine composed of different grape varieties:
There is a second wine produced at the Château named after Gérard Perse's daughter, "Angélique de Monbousquet."
