Order wine : Château Montrose 1947
Saint-Estèphe -2ème Grand Cru Classé
98/100 Parker
When to drink this wine : Estimated peak (2016 - 2030). A mature wine that can be drunk now.
Tasted by Neal Martin in 2017: “Tasted at the Montrose vertical in London, the Montrose 1947 was served from a magnum. This is one of the best bottles I've come across from this legendary vintage. It has a deep color, with just a touch of tile at the rim. The bouquet is about as fine as can be found in the 1947 vintage. First of all, there's less volatility than in other wines - this one is rather sweet by comparison. However, the definition is remarkable, with extraordinarily precise aromas of red fruits (strawberry and raspberry), rose petals, damp earth and perhaps a touch of glycerine. The palate is quite full-bodied and certainly not as precocious or hedonistic as the other 1947s. It's beautifully structured, as if an award-winning architect had built this wine. The concentration is astonishing, and it blossoms gently with sublime mineralized red fruits of ineffable purity on the finish. It must be one of the estate's most remarkable wines of the 20th century, along with many others. Tasted in June 2016.”
