Saint-Estèphe - 2nd Grand Cru Classé
93+/100 Parker
When to drink it : Drink it now or cellar it until 2040
Tasted by Neal Martin in 2017: "Tasted at the château, the 2001 Montrose is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot harvested between September 24 and October 9. It has a fairly tight bouquet and needs a good decanting or, better yet, another 5-6 years in bottle. The scents one can get from it are attractive: blackberry, a touch of tar and feather, then Indian ink and cedar wood. The palate has slightly tight tannins, fine acidity and impressive harmony. It gains complexity towards the end. Tense, mineral and nervous, it becomes a very pleasant Montrose that will surprise some people. Of course, it lacks a bit of persistence, however, keep an eye on it."
