Pauillac - Premier Grand Cru Classé
93/100 Parker
- Cellaring : Now - 2030
- Parker's 2002 tasting: "The magnificent 1999 Mouton Rothschild could be a modern clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated ruby/purple colour is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy and long. The tannins on the finish suggest that more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. This is a complex and classic Mouton."
WHEN TO DRINK THIS WINE?
This is a rare and old vintage of Mouton Rothschild. It matured decades ago. You can enjoy it today or collect it.
THE VINEYARD
The vineyard is planted on very deep gravel, with grape varieties typical of the region: Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%). This proportion is not identical in the wine, as the blend varies according to the character of each vintage.
LABEL PRODUCED BY RAYMOND SAVIGNAC
More than seventy years after the poster artist Jean Carlu produced the first artist's label for Mouton Rothschild in 1924, the design by another master of posters, Savignac, for 1999, is a return to the roots. With a wink and a stampede, his ram, the totem of Mouton, invites us to enjoy drinking and happily chases away the millennium that is drawing to a close.
