Château Mouton Rothschild 2018
Pauillac - Premier Grand Cru Classé
• 100/100 James Suckling & 99/100 Parker : Exceptional vintage
- Cellaring : 2027 - 2067
- Tasted by Lisa Perrotti-Brown on March 31, 2021: "The 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc - there's also a touch of all the Petit Verdot they had, but it doesn't even register in the percentage. It is 13.8% alcohol, which is relatively modest for the vintage. Deep garnet/purple in colour, it opens with bright, vibrant notes of crushed black currants, juicy blackberries, and red currant jelly, with hints of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice, and black tea, as well as a hint of dusty red earth. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house with super-firm, super-ripe grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savoury with lingering mineral suggestions. It is so, so delicious and, because of the ripeness of the tannins, it is accessible now. It will be hard not to touch it for 5-7 years, when all those well-hidden nuances start to emerge. After that, it should improve for 25 years or more and drink well for 40 years or more."
- Label: Designed by Chinese artist and writer Xu Bing (born 1955). The work created for the 2018 vintage reflects the artist's work on the illusory splendour of appearances, illustrated by his Square Word Calligraphy, which looks like traditional Chinese characters but is actually composed of the letters of the Latin alphabet. Xu Bing thus expresses his linguistic creativity to invent a unique script in which words are absorbed into the codes of traditional Chinese ideography. The label of the 2018 vintage reflects this fraternity of cultures by reading the two words "Mouton Rothschild".
