- Tasting by Lisa Perrotti-Brown on 20 May 2021: "The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc - there's also a touch of all the Petit Verdot they had, but it doesn't even register in the percentage. It is 13.8% alcohol, which is relatively modest for the vintage. Deep garnet/purple in colour, it opens with bright, vibrant notes of crushed black currants, juicy blackberries, and red currant jelly, with hints of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice, and black tea, as well as a hint of dusty red earth. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house with super-firm, super-ripe grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savoury with lingering mineral suggestions. It is so, so delicious and, because of the ripeness of the tannins, it is accessible now. It will be hard not to touch it for 5-7 years, when all those well-hidden nuances start to emerge. After that, it should improve for 25 years or more and drink well for 40 years or more."
TERROIR
The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, with 13.1% alcohol and a pH of about 3.78.
THE 2020 VINTAGE LABEL BY PETER DOIG
The label for the 2020 vintage is a unique work by Peter Doig. A Scottish-born painter, he wanted to depict a painting celebrating the cultivation of grapes & their harvest, which would feature characters working in the vineyards.
