When to drink this wine : Now to 2031 (Wine Advocate estimate)
Tasted by William Kelley in 2022: "I haven't tasted the 1961 Palmer for a number of years and at this stage it's a little fragile. So it was an immense pleasure to drink a bottle that lived up to its legendary reputation. Offering a complex bouquet of ripe wild berries, iris and candied violets mixed with notions of black truffle, pipe tobacco and gentle earth notes, it is medium-bodied, soft and supple, with a sweet core of fruit, melted tannins and ripe acids. Concluding with a long, intensely sapid finish, this sumptuous, impeccably balanced Palmer is one of the vintage's great wines. In fact, I sent the lees to the local oenological laboratory and, incredibly, the wine is only 11% alcohol, yet the intensity of the flavours and the obvious ripeness are such that tasters invariably guess a higher figure."
When tasting Château Palmer, we recommend savoring it slowly, taking time to appreciate its different aromatic layers and complexity. Pair it with dishes such as refined red meats, game birds, mature cheeses and the delicacies of French cuisine."
