- Tasting: The 2009 vintage – picked on September 25; a surprisingly pale green-gold color; and about 14.5% alcohol – offers a riot of tropical fruits that I rarely remember on this site. Papaya, kumquat, grapefruit, lime, Persian melon and passion fruit all migrate to an opulent, glycerin-rich palate, delivering a long and luscious, if slightly warm and sizzling, finish. An aura of distilled botanical essences floats through this wine, and a classic chalkiness and saline-sweet lobster shell reduction flavor lend remarkable mineral depth to a wine of such maturity. It will be fascinating to serve and follow, but it must be paired carefully and cellared vigilantly because of its richness and high alcohol content.”
