100/100 Parker
When to drink this wine : Now.
Tasted in 1996 by Robert Parker: "The Petrus 1921 (never tasted before) was, to say the least, out of this world! The opaque colour had amber highlights around the edges, but the nose of black raspberries, freshly brewed coffee and mocha/toffee sweets was followed by one of the sweetest, most opulent, thickest and juiciest wines I have ever tasted. Extraordinarily rich and opulent, with interesting notes of cedar in the succulent flavours, this huge and incredibly concentrated wine could have been mistaken for the 1950 or 1947. If I ever had to kill for a wine ..... L'Eglise-Clinet 1921 and Petrus 1921 are two of the greatest wines I have ever drunk.
The secret of the Petrus terroir
Clay is the secret of Petrus. Petrus is first and foremost a unique 20-hectare terroir on the Pomerol plateau, which is also home to two other famous châteaux, La Conseillante and L'Evangile. Petrus occupies the highest point on the plateau, atop a 40-metre mound known as the Boutonnière argileuse de Pétrus, a cold, clayey terroir surrounded by gravel and sand. These famous, very fine, swelling black clays have the ability to store water and release it drop by drop to the vines. This clay acts like a kind of sponge, absorbing the water, but the excess, like a natural drain, runs off towards the bottom of the plateau.
Serving
The ideal serving temperature is around 15°C. It goes very well with a fillet of beef with duck foie gras, for example.
