Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, is a 75-hectare wine-growing estate located in Pauillac, in the Gironde. It is ranked deuxième grand cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification.
The famous Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has made enormous progress over the last 20 years. This is largely due to the energy, motivation and ambition of May-Eliane de Lenquesaing, who took over the property in 1978. Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a 75-hectare estate that produces an average of 36,000 bottles a year. Situated to the east of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyards (grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon 45%, Merlot 35%, Cabernet Franc 12%, Petit Verdot 8%) are located on deep gravel beds supported by clay, then sandstone and limestone (part of these vines reside in the St-Julien appellation era).
The wine is fermented in stainless steel vats and then aged in oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months. Pichon-Longueville Lalande is not as powerful or as tannic as some of its neighbours in Pauillac, notably due to its relatively high Merlot content. In the best years, it is one of the most exotic and voluptuous wines of the Médoc. At least a decade of cellaring is required before approaching the wines.
Here are a few exceptional wines from Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande. These vintages are very well rated by the greatest tasters such as The Wine Advocate, The Wine Spectator etc.
Pichon Comtesse's best years: 1982, 2000, 1996, 1995, 2009, 2003
