What is the Pommard appellation?

Pommard is a Burgundy wine from the Côte de Beaune. These are the most powerful red wines of the Côte de Beaune, where the complex soils containing a high proportion of iron-rich clay produce dark, relatively tannic wines. Two vineyards stand out: the lower part of Les Rugiens, which has been promoted to become a grand cru and the Clos des Épeneaux, a five-hectare enclosed plot, monopole of Comte Armand. The production of Pommard is 10,500 hl. The grape variety is a pinot noir which gives a garnet colour. The vineyard of Pommard represents 350 hectares of which 122 hectares are classified as Premier Cru, with 28 appellations.

The producers of the beginning of the 20th century added to the local production quantity of Algerian wines supposed to bring the alcohol and the fatness which seemed to be missing in Pommard, which made a big noise in the world. Thankfully, things have changed a lot since then. Today, Pommard wines  are internationally famous for their elegance and concentration. The market has awarded prizes of grands crus to the premier crus Les Rugiens and Les Épenots. A reputation not totally usurped. The best vintages of Pommard are present in the list below.
