Château Prieuré-Lichine, formerly château Prieuré-Cantenac, is a wine estate located in Cantenac in Gironde. A vineyard of 77.5 hectares on Günzian and Pyrenean gravels which today produces 300,000 bottles a year.
In AOC Margaux, it is ranked quatrième grand cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification.
What are the specificities of Château Prieuré-Lichine?
The estate, a former priory, was created in the 15th century by Benedictine monks from Saint-Pierre de Vertheuil Abbey. The vineyard did not cover the entire estate until the 18th century. During the French Revolution the estate was confiscated and put up for sale. It was then Alexis Lichine who bought the estate in 1951, bequeathing it his name. Alexis Lichine, author of the encyclopaedia of Wines and Spirits, did not skimp on the efforts to restore and renovate the estate. Current owner, the Ballante family bought the estate in 1999.
Château Prieuré-Lichine d'appellation Margaux is a blended wine made up of:
Harvesting is carried out by hand and the Château is committed to a reasoned culture with a view to respecting the environment. The estate is thinking ahead and has announced the launch of a 15-year vineyard renewal plan. Since 2012, Château Prieuré-Lichine has been equipped with 34 new thermo-regulated vats of 80 to 120 hectolitres. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 16 to 18 months. A production method that allows to obtain a wine with a keeping potential of 20 to 30 months.
The Quatrième Grand Cru de Margaux is the very expression of the values of its terroir, combining elegance, depth and finesse that characterises the greatest Margaux wines.
The Château produces 4 wines under the expert advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt.
Indeed, the Château produces a Second wine "Confidences du Château Prieuré-Lichine" which originates in the different sandy-gravelly terroirs of Margaux. The Domaine makes it a point of honour to give it the same care as its Grand Vin.
The "Clocher du Prieuré" is a Haut Médoc appellation wine produced on the plots adjoining the Prieuré-Lichine vineyard. It is now reaching full maturity and is more supple than the wines of Margaux.
The Château also produces "Le Blanc du Château Prieuré-Lichine" of the Bordeaux appellation. An anecdotal quantity of 20 barrels per year is produced on a small plot of 1.5 hectares in the commune of Arsac. The "Blanc du Château Prieuré-Lichine" is composed of two grape varieties:
