Beaune Greves 1er cru White 2018 - Jacques Prieur
GRAPE VARIETY & AREA
Grape variety: 100% Chardonnay on a plot of 0.54 hectare.
TERROIR
Beautiful parcel overlooking the outskirts of Beaune.
Clay-limestone soil with a predominance of sandstone (small pebbles) and sand. The silica contained in the latter favours heat and light, which is a guarantee of maturity. The wines are recognisable by their fine, fruity character.
VINIFICATION & MATURATION
The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates and the whole bunches are pressed in a pneumatic press. Alcoholic fermentation and maturation are done 100% in oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation is carried out at 100%.
Duration of maturation: 20 months.
TASTING NOTES
COLOUR: Luminous silvery-gold, with strong green highlights.
NOSE: Charming with notes of yellow fruit (apricot, mirabelle plum), evolving on pleasant buttery notes.
PALATE: Fresh, crisp, spicy and chiselled on a beautiful note of ripe and sweet fruit. Salivating and digestible finish.
"All records broken compared to normal
Low rainfall - Exceptional sunshine - Temperature 2°C higher "
April overturned all forecasts, with high temperatures and plenty of sunshine, the vine growth was dazzling. In mid-April, the budburst stage reached 5-6 leaves in one week in the early areas and from a late year, 2018 became one of the three most advanced vintages in terms of vegetation in a few days (2007, 2011).
Under the influence of quasi-tropical climatic conditions (heat and rain since the end of May), June was a spectacular month for vine development: in 3 weeks, we went from the end of flowering to the complete closure of the grapes. Another striking fact was that towards the end of June, the pressure of mildew was increasingly felt.
The very hot weather and the exceptional sunshine in July initiated the beginning of veraison from mid-July and depending on the more or less dry sectors, the veraison stage was between 20% and 80% at the end of the month. The first 15 days of August were very hot with temperatures above 32°C. These extreme conditions once again caused a rapid progression of the vine's stages and once again, after 2003-2007-2011-2015-2017, the precocity of the 2018 vintage was confirmed. Harvesting at the estate began on 29 August and ended on 12 September. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes are equally ripe, with no significant difference between the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits.
The harvest took place in dry, hot and very bright weather (even very hot from September 10th).
NOSE : Charming with notes of yellow fruits (apricot, mirabelle plum), evolving on pleasant buttered notes.
PALATE : Fresh, crisp, spicy and chiselled on a beautiful note of ripe and sweet fruit. A salivating and digestible finish.
