Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 - Faiveley

Domaine Faiveley

(93 - 95)/100 Parker

Tasted by William Kelley on January 14, 2021: "Aromas of cassis, orange peel, smoked meat and loamy soil introduce Faiveley's demonstrative, concentrated and succulent 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, with a full core of ripe fruit framed by velvety tannins and lively acids. This is another particularly fine vintage this year."

CHARACTERISTIC OF THE APPELLATION

This charming Grand Cru is located on the northernmost part of the Côte, in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. The production areas of Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin are the same, and it is the Charmes-Chambertin appellation that is usually claimed.

Exposure: East

Soil: Brown with a clay content of about 40%, lava and iron ore.

Grape variety: Pinot Noir

Surface Area: 0 ha 81a 23 ca [2 Acres]

Year of plantation: 1925, 1930, 1959, 1999

VINIFICATION & MATURING

The grapes are cut and sorted by hand. The proportions of de-stemming and whole grapes vary according to each vintage. The grapes are punched down daily to extract their color, tannins and aromas from the skins. After 19 days of vatting, the alcoholic fermentation is completed. The free-run wine is drained by gravity while a slow and gentle pressing of the marc allows to obtain a press wine of great purity. For 16 to 18 months, our wines are aged in French oak barrels (60% new barrels and 40% one-wine barrels) in our cellars with a natural and constant hygrometry and temperature. These barrels are selected for the fineness of their grain and their moderate toasting.

TASTING

Charmes-Chambertin has a beautiful dark ruby color, and suggests a rich aromatic palette of small red fruits, spices and flowers. It is an opulent and elegant wine with silky tannins. It will need a few years before being fully appreciated.

Pairings : Hare stew, venison terrine, mature cheeses

Temperature : 16°C

Aging potential : 10 to 25 years

I love this site. Whether it's for old wines, or recent ones. The choice of partner estates is impressive, and allocations are sold at fair prices. Ludovic's advice is always excellent.
