When to drink this wine : 2018 - 2038
"Jadot's 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has perhaps the most elegant bouquet of the quintet, perhaps the best translation of terroir with exquisite definition of red cherry and strawberry, with a touch of mineral. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very supple, almost nubile on the palate, leading to a concentrated finish that lingers long and sweet. It doesn't quite offer the sophistication of Bruno Clair's Clos Saint-Jacques, but with sufficient bottle age it should show its pedigree. Tasted in September 2017."
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
Gevrey-Chambertin, a village in the north of the Côte de Nuits, is home to 26 Premier Crus and 8 Grand Crus. Half of the Premier Crus surround the Grand Crus towards Morey, while the other half extends north towards the Combe de Lavaux, characterised by limestone and clay soils.
CHARACTERISTICS
The Clos Saint Jacques vineyard lies at the origin of the Combe de Lavaux fault, enjoying an exceptional south-east exposure. This prestigious vineyard, strangely omitted from the Grand Cru classification, is shared between just five owners. The soils, rich in limestone with a significant proportion of clayey marl, give the terroir a unique character.
VINIFICATION AND AGEING
The harvest, meticulously carried out by hand and in small crates, aims to preserve the integrity of the fruit. After meticulous hand-sorting and de-stemming, the grapes are macerated in open wooden or stainless steel vats for 3 to 4 weeks. The cap is punched down twice a day during fermentation. The wine is aged for around 18 months in barrels from the cooperage, around a third of which are new.
FOOD AND WINE PAIRING
This Gevrey-Chambertin goes perfectly with a range of dishes, such as roast salmon, roast chicken, grilled red meats (beef, lamb chops, osso bucco, stews, civets, boeuf bourguignon), duck, quail, partridge, teppanyaki beef, venison, wild boar, as well as accompaniments such as mashed potatoes with salted butter, Cîteaux and Mont d'Or.
