Nuits St Georges 1er cru Les Damodes 2019 - Faiveley
(92 - 94)/100 Parker
Tasted by William Kelley on January 14, 2021: "Aromas of black currants, plums, orange peel and spicy new oak preface Faiveley's 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes, a deep, lively wine with a concentrated core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. Concluding with a long, mineral finish, this is another fine bottling from this cool, high-altitude, northeast-facing site."
THE VINTAGE
2019 is a cool and balanced vintage characterized by extreme weather (frost, heat wave). The volumes are low but the quality is exceptional. Harvesting began on Monday, September 9 and ended on September 21 in Côte de Nuits. The wines are charming, well balanced, fresh and straight. The tannins are fine and not very astringent. In the mouth, they are perfumed. They express juicy and sunny fruit notes as well as spicy notes.
CHARACTERISTIC OF THE APPELLATION
The name "Les Damodes" refers to the druidesses who lived in this place. This vineyard planted at high altitude, on the border with Vosne-Romanée, allows us to produce a very mineral wine with little tannin. It is a feminine and silky wine.

VINIFICATION & MATURING
The grapes are cut and sorted by hand. The proportions of de-stemming and whole grapes vary according to each vintage. A daily punching of the cap is done to extract color, tannins and aromas from the grapes. After 19 days of vatting, the alcoholic fermentation is completed. The free-run wine is drained by gravity while a slow and gentle pressing of the marc allows to obtain a press wine of great purity. For 16 months, our wines are aged in French oak barrels (40 to 50% of which are new and 50 to 60% of which are two-wine barrels) in our cellars with a natural and constant hygrometry and temperature. These barrels are selected for the fineness of their grain and their moderate toasting.
