Tasted by William Kelley on January 14, 2021: "Rossignol's terrific 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots floats in the glass with aromas of plums, dark berries, exotic spices, peonies, blood orange, and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it is deep and multidimensional, with a concentrated core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a long, lively finish. As is often the case, this old-vine cuvee is the highlight of the portfolio, and it will take special effort to find it."
Rossignol began harvesting in mid-September, and he has produced a fine set of wines: rich and luscious, they are spectacular and elegantly muscular, with ripe fruit tones, powdery tannins, and succulent acids. Now comfortably ensconced in his new winery on the outskirts of Beaune, Nicolas has achieved a mature style, much more classic than his attention-grabbing aesthetic of yesteryear. Today, he is one of the most serious producers in the Côte de Beaune.
Geographical location: Two plots of land, one located at the foot of the Pommard hill, in Les Petits Épenots, on the Beaune side at the bottom of the hill, the other at the top of the hill above the Clos des Épeneaux.
The soil and the environment : The soil is reddish to light, with many rolled stones. Fairly light, very draining soil which allows the grapes to reach very good maturity.
The vines: One is about 50 years old, the other is more than a hundred years old.
The wine: A rich and powerful wine. Full and intense aromas of almost wild black fruits, with powerful tannins typical of the Pommard terroir but ripe and still silky.
