Tasted by Parker in 1996: "With the exception of the 1966 and 1870 vintages of Lafite-Rothschild, these wines were poured into virgin territory for my palate. The other great classics of the last century were remarkable wines, all with their original corks and in extraordinary condition. Their age has been authenticated by Michael Broadbent, who is the only person in the world lucky enough to have tasted these wines on more than one occasion. Believe it or not, the Rausan-Segla 1865 had a deep, opaque garnet colour of surprising intensity. It reveals an exceptional nose of chocolate, cedar and blackcurrant. Extremely concentrated and powerful, as well as remarkably young (I would have thought the wine was 40-50 years old), this full-bodied, exceptionally rich and thick wine shows no signs of decline. Could this wine keep for another 30-50 years?"
