Vinsobres 2020 - Chateau de Rouanne
From the estate - Château de St Cosme property
- Tasting: A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, Vinsobres has an intriguing mix of herbaceous, floral and fruity notes on the nose, with scents ranging from bay leaf and lavender to violet and purple raspberry. It is silky and fine on the palate, with a final touch of licorice. This is an excellent debut, showing complexity and elegance, not raw power, for new estate owner Louis Barruol of Château Saint-Cosme in Gigondas.
- Characteristics: Pliocene and Tortonian limestone marl. Vines with an average age of 50 years in organic farming. Traditional co-fermentation in concrete vats. Native yeasts. Aged for 12 months in demi-muids and Burgundy rooms. 15% new - 50% one wine - 35% two wines.
- The winemaker tells you about it : We are here in the historical, geological and viticultural heart of the property. On this spot stood the Villa of Rugius, the first inhabitant of Rouanne under the Roman Empire. When we plow, we find quantities of tiles identical to those found at the site of Herculaneum, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. "Les Crottes" (from the Latin Crypta) are mentioned as early as the 18th century on the famous Cassini maps and refer to vaulted cellars and caves.
The configuration of the buildings and the numerous springs of Rouanne give a lot of meaning to this name. At the place called "Rouanne et les Crottes" which is located in the middle of the hillside, the soil is perfectly balanced: the slope offers a good drainage, the softness of the slope avoids the draining of the organic matter, the clay is in perfect proportion and the limestone is sufficient to generate finesse. In many hillside regions and above all in Burgundy, the middle of the hillside is often the Holy Grail of quality for physical and mechanical reasons. "Rouanne et les Crottes" is indeed a kind of Grail: it is here that the heart of Rouanne beats with flamboyance.
