Rivesaltes is an appellation of the historic sweet wines of eastern Roussillon, in the great south of France. The vins doux naturels produced in this region have been respected at least since the 14th century. This wine is produced near the commune of Rivesaltes over a large part of the Pyrénées-Orientales and a smaller part of the Aude. The Rivesaltes appellation comprises 5200 ha and the production is about 127000 hectolitres each year.
The old vintages of Rivesaltes are kept in barrels for decades and are bottled 2 years before marketing. The climate is Mediterranean and the grape varieties are: grenache, muscat, macabeu and malvoisie. The grapes thus hold a great richness. The technique used to make them is one of the most used techniques for sweet wines. Unlike botrytised wines or ice wines, the vins doux naturels are made by mutage, which consists in stopping the fermentation of the musts while maintaining a high level of natural sweetness. With their high levels of residual sugar (minimum 100 g/l) and alcohol (between 15% and 17% ABV), these wines are sweet and relatively viscous. Naturally, Rivesaltes wines are often confused with Muscat de Rivesaltes wines, which are similar in style and come from the same region. The main difference is that Muscat de Rivesaltes is produced from Muscat grapes, while Rivesaltes is made from Grenache in all three forms (Noir, Blanc and Gris).
We can advise the famous Maison Cazes with their old vintages of vins doux naturels. These are excellent wines for laying down. The same goes for the estates of the great Philippe Gayral. Namely: Domaine Casenobe, La Sobilane and Riveyrac.
