Roc de Cambes is located in the Côtes de Bourg appellation. It is not very far from Saint-Émilion. In fact, the geographical location of the estate inspired the name of the estate, as it is located in the commune of St. Laurent des Combes. Interestingly, the terroir of Roc de Cambes is not dissimilar to that of Tertre Roteboeuf, their legendary Saint-Emilion estate, which is also owned by the Mitjavile family. This partly explains why Roc de Cambes was bought by the Mitjavile family. The family is also the winemaker at Château Martet.
The 12.5 hectare vineyard of Roc de Cambes is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Malbec and Cabernet Franc vines have been removed from the vineyard. The terroir is mainly composed of limestone and clay soils, similar to those found on the right bank of Bordeaux, particularly in Saint-Émilion. The vineyard is south-southwest facing on the top of a plateau, with a view of the river. The vines are old. In fact, many of the vines used for Roc de Cambes are nearly 50 years old, which is impressive. They have vines that are over 50 years old, which adds to the concentration, character and complexity of the wines. Roc de Cambes is vinified in traditional concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. The wine is then matured in an average of 50% new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months before bottling.
The best vintages of Roc de Cambes are: 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009 and 2005.
Château Roc de Cambes is best enjoyed with at least 4-6 years of ageing in good vintages. Young vintages can be decanted for 1 hour to 90 minutes. This allows the wine to soften and open up its flavour. Older vintages may need to be decanted very little, just enough to remove sediment. Château Roc de Cambes offers its best tasting conditions and should reach its maximum maturity between 5 and 15 years after the vintage.
