By William Kelley on September 23, 2021 : "Roederer's Brut Premier was created in the 1980s to prove to consumers that we could offer consistent quality with a blend that compensated for less-than-perfectly ripe vintages," explains Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon. "We were blending in search of maturity, of ripeness. The concept of the Brut Collection is the opposite: we seek freshness and embrace singularity, which we emphasise by listing the blend of each year." This project has been in gestation since 2012, when Lecaillon set aside 21,000 litres of wine to form a perpetual reserve aged in large vats without malolactic fermentation. Sourcing has also evolved: less must comes from co-ops, and only vineyards grown without herbicides inform the blend. A dedicated team oversees all of this, visiting each winemaker three times a year. And the winemaking is done plot by plot to provide a maximum of blend components. Iteration 242 is based on the 2017 vintage (56%), supplemented by 34% reserve wines from the perpetual reserve established in 2012 and 10% reserve wines aged in foudre."

It was a desire for freedom, to push the quality of the multi-millennial blends even further, that led the winemakers to take a new approach: the creation of Collection, a worthy successor to Brut Premier. A living Champagne, more contemporary than ever!

With Collection, it is an evolution of structure, form and style, the dawn of a new chapter for the house continues to write with passion. 

This new Collection cuvée is the expression of the art of blending at Roederer and of our winegrower roots, in particular through the selection of plots chosen from the heart of the Champagne terroir. A symbol of the House's freedom of style, Collection is based on the freshness of a "perpetual reserve" created in 2012, which, complemented by the depth of reserve wines aged in wood, gives Collection a complex personality that reveals itself over time.
