The grands crus of the northernmost appellation of the Médoc offers a purity and intensity rarely found in other Bordeaux wines. Saint-Estèphe wines are powerful, rich, full-bodied, tannic and structured wines that are destined to age. Matured Saint-Estephe wines are rich, concentrated and complex with notes of blackcurrant, fresh blackberry and cigar box.
The Saint Estèphe appellation has five Grands Crus Classés: Cos d'Estournel and Montrose are the flagships of the wines of St Estèphe. Montrose is located on the banks of the Gironde river while Cos d'Estournel is situated on a hill that sets the limit of Pauillac and offers a perfect view of its neighbour the Château Lafite (Premier Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac). The other three Grand Cru Classés de Saint Estèphe, Calon-Segur, Lafon Rochet and Cos Labory produce wines of great consistency.
The Saint Estèphe appellation is also known for its Crus Bourgeois with good value for money such as Phelan-Segur, Haut Marbuzet or Les Ormes de Pez.
Most of Médoc is filled with gravel, rock, limestone and sand with a minimal amount of clay. Conversely, the soil of St Estèphe contains large deposits of clay, which allows the Châteaux de St Estèphe to produce excellent wines in hot and dry years such as the 2003 and 2010 vintages.

Serving temperature :
The ideal serving temperature for Saint-Estèphe wines is around 16-18°C for younger vintages. If you have an older wine, you might consider serving it slightly cooler, at around 14 to 16°C, to better appreciate its complex aromas. The best St Estèphe wines can be kept for many years in a cellar (damp and at room temperature).
