The Saint Julien appellation in the Bordeaux region is located between Margaux and Pauillac and includes 11 hectares of vines Grands Crus Classé representing 80% of the AOC. Such concentration is the key to the fame of the wines of St Julien. The vineyard is admirable, one of the richest dependencies of the Haut-Medoc. This appellation is renowned for its high-quality red wines, which are mainly made from traditional Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
The grands crus of St Julien are renowned for their elegance, balance and structure. They are often considered to be among the finest and most classic Bordeaux wines. You can of course choose from a number of different estates, and also seek out the finest vintages in the appellation, but here are just a few of the renowned Saint-Julien producers: Château Léoville-Las Cases, Château Léoville-Poyferré, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Gruaud-Larose, and Château Beychevelle, to name but a few. Don't hesitate to contact us and we'll advise you on which château to choose, depending on the success of the vintage.
Saint Julien's Grands Crus Classés form two distinct groups:
These wines are characterised by their complex bouquet of black fruit, blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco and spices, as well as their firm tannic structure. They have great ageing potential and improve over time, developing more complex flavours and more subtle aromas (particularly in the best years of production).
Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classés are made to age, especially in the great vintages.
It is recommended that they be enjoyed after a certain period of maturation in bottle, generally between 5 and 15 years after bottling, or even longer depending on the vintage and the producer. However, this depends on each person's personal style. You can also enjoy them young, but expect more tannin.

Saint-Julien is an emblematic site in the Bordeaux wine region, offering visitors a unique experience combining history, quality wine and picturesque landscapes.
Saint-Julien dates back to Gallo-Roman times, and its name is linked to the legend of Saint Julien l'Hospitalier. The region's history is also marked by the domination of the Knights Templar in the Middle Ages. The lands of Saint-Julien were part of the ancient Duchy of Aquitaine, before being incorporated into the Kingdom of France.
Saint-Julien is located in the Médoc, a region renowned for its vineyards. The commune lies on the left bank of the Gironde, around 45 kilometres north-west of Bordeaux. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean influences the region's climate, creating ideal conditions for growing vines.
Saint-Julien is famous for its vineyards, which are part of the Saint-Julien appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC). The wines produced in this region are mainly reds, made from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Saint-Julien wines are renowned for their elegance, structure and ability to age well.
The commune is home to several prestigious wine châteaux, including Château Léoville-Las Cases, Château Léoville-Poyferré, Château Talbot and Château Beychevelle. These wineries offer tours and tastings, allowing visitors to discover the wines of the region.
Saint-Julien is a popular destination for wine and food lovers. Tourists can visit châteaux, taste local wines and enjoy regional cuisine in the area's restaurants. What's more, its proximity to the Gironde estuary offers opportunities for fishing and water sports.
One of the interesting anecdotes about Saint-Julien concerns Château Beychevelle, whose wine label features a stylised ship. According to legend, an admiral in Louis XV's fleet used to ask ships to lower their sails as they passed the château as a sign of respect, hence the origin of the ship on the wine label.
