Château Suduiraut is a wine estate of 200 hectares, of which 92 are vineyards. It is located in Preignac, in the south of Bordeaux. This prestigious wine of Sauternes is a first great classified growth.
With vines of an average age of twenty-five years, planted in limestone, sandy and stony soil, a stone's throw from Yquem, it is one of the sure values of the appellation. And this, in spite of an empty period at the beginning of the 1970s, the 1976 vintage being the only exception. Axa Millésimes, which took control of the estate in 1992, was to bring to the vineyard what it still lacked to regularize its quality.
The estate offers a wine composed of two different grape varieties for tasting:
Tasting
Of great renown, Château Suduiraut is mellow, racy, powerful, with the promise of varied aromas of flowers, fruits and candied grapes. The old vintages, highly sought after and very rare, are really worth the detour, with a capacity to be kept for several decades, they are fabulous.
The wine combining freshness, power and balance is one of the eleven First Growths of 1855. Château Suduiraut is without doubt one of the best producers of the appellation. It can compete with its neighbor, Yquem, on the best vintages.
Vinification
Late harvest, the grapes are picked by hand and spread over several weeks with a grain by grain collection in order to produce a very precise wine. Vinified in French oak barrels, the wine is aged on lees in 50% new French oak barrels for 18-24 months, depending on the character of the vintage. In exceptional vintages (1982 and 1989 for the most recent ones), the château produces its "Cuvée Madame", a selection of the best vats, sold in infinitesimal quantities.
In order to best express its terroir, the estate produces a second wine, Castelnau de Suduiraut, which made its debut in 1992. The estate also produces a dry white Bordeaux wine, S de Suduiraut, which was first produced with the 2004 vintage.
