In the 21st century, wine production exists in all fifty states of the Union, with California leading the way, followed by Washington State, Oregon and New York State. The United States is the world's fourth largest wine producer behind France, Italy and Spain, and California's production alone accounts for 90% of US production and double that of Australia. Nearly 450 thousand hectares of vineyards were planted in the United States in 2006, making it the fifth largest country in terms of vineyard area after Spain, France, Italy and Turkey.
