The estate of Vieux Château Certan is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau. Covering 14 hectares of vines in a single block, the vineyard of the Vieux Château Certan is the fruit of a century of meticulous work and techniques, great decisions taken by competent winemakers. Today the estate's vineyard is composed of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This varietal blend allows us to seek the best possible balance between Merlot and Cabernet Franc in each vintage. The latter behaves exceptionally well on this terroir and reaches perfect levels of ripeness. The grapes are hand-picked and meticulously sorted at the end of each row of wines. After gentle crushing, they are put into oak vats, by variety. The vats intended for the blending of the Grand Vin are transformed into 100% new French oak barrels and aged between 18 and 22 months.
Tasting of the 2000 vintage rated 97/100 by The Wine Spectator in 2015: "It reveals remarkable maturity at the beginning, with black tea and spice notes at first. But there is a beautiful column of tannin structure and finely pearled acidity. This brings us back to a fresher side. As the core and raspberry paste notes slowly awaken, throwing out nuances of cherry, blackcurrant, and plum. A superb finish. This wine is excellent for cellaring and could be cellared for several more years before it is at its peak." JM
