When to drink this wine : 2020 - 2060
Tasted by Lisa Perrotti-Brown: ‘The 2010 Vieux Château Certan is a deep garnet colour and the nose opens like a spice bomb, with notes of fenugreek, caraway seeds and cinnamon stick over a core of Black Forest cake, plum jam and blueberry tart with hints of perfumed earth and crushed rocks. The full-bodied, rich and seductive palate is loaded with layers of preserved black and blue fruits, framed by superb tannins, and finishes with epic, perfumed length.’
Tasting notes:
Vieux Château Certan is a classic Bordeaux-style red wine, characterised by its complexity and elegance. It generally presents aromas of ripe red fruit such as cherry, strawberry and raspberry, as well as hints of blackcurrant. There are also hints of liquorice, truffle, tobacco and sometimes even floral nuances. On the palate, this wine is silky, with well-integrated tannins, good structure and a long finish. It may evolve favourably with time, developing more complex aromas.
Grape variety:
Vieux Château Certan is mainly made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Merlot generally predominates, providing softness and roundness, while Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon add structure and complexity.
Food and wine pairing:
This Bordeaux wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, particularly classic French cuisine :
- It pairs well with red meat dishes, such as grilled steak, roast beef, or roast lamb.
- It also goes well with game dishes, especially duck.
- Soft cheeses such as Brie or Camembert are good companions for this wine.
- For a vegetarian option, pair it with sautéed mushroom dishes.
Serving temperature:
Vieux Château Certan is generally served at a temperature of 16 to 18°C.
