Tasted by Lisa Perrotti-Brown: ‘The 2016 Vieux Château Certan is a blend of 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in colour, it leaps from the glass with vivid, pure notions of candied violets, chocolate-covered cherries, blackberry compote and blackberries with perfumed touches of raspberry leaf, crushed rocks, liquorice, caraway seeds and yeast extract, as well as a blast of red roses. Quite full-bodied and elegant, the palate moves from quiet intensity to an incredibly well-supported aria of crisp red and black cherry notes and tons of floral nuance, framed by exquisitely soft but firm tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long with lingering mineral and floral sparks. How does this 2016 compare to the astonishing 2015 vintage? Stylistically, they're very different, as my notes on each show, but beyond that, I'm struck by the incredible harmony and fluidity of the 2016, and the astonishing depth and energy it exudes this year. Well done!’
Tasting notes:
Vieux Château Certan is a classic Bordeaux-style red wine, characterised by its complexity and elegance. It generally presents aromas of ripe red fruit such as cherry, strawberry and raspberry, as well as hints of blackcurrant. There are also hints of liquorice, truffle, tobacco and sometimes even floral nuances. On the palate, this wine is silky, with well-integrated tannins, good structure and a long finish. It may evolve favourably with time, developing more complex aromas.
