Gigondas 2019 Racines - Domaine Les Pallières
Gigondas - Owner Brunier family : Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
96/100 James Suckling
A wine for laying down.
Tasted in 2022: ‘This wine shows the greatness that Gigondas is capable of. A huge wine, but with great structure and breathtaking aromatic complexity. Great black fruit, but so many herbaceous and savoury nuances, followed by a long, smoky, fleshy finish. Excellent ageing potential. A blend of 80% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 7% Cinsault and 5% Clairette.’
Owned by the Brunier family (or Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe and American importer Kermit Lynch), Domaine Les Pallières bottles two cuvées of Gigondas each year. The Terrasse du Diable comes from the highest and coolest parcels, while Les Racines comes from the plateau surrounding the estate itself and includes the oldest vines on the property. Of the two, Le Diable is generally the more powerful wine, but it never seems to lack elegance. There is also an interesting barrel-fermented rosé produced as a Vin de France.
