Purchase bottles of Gigondas Les Terrasses du Diable 2021 - Domaine Les Pallières
Gigondas - Brunier family: Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe - The name means : "The Devil's Terraces"
Guard: now until 2032+.
Owned by the Brunier family (or the Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe and the American importer Kermit Lynch), Domaine Les Pallières bottles two vintages of Gigondas each year. La Terrasse du Diable comes from the highest, coolest plots, while Les Racines comes from the plateau surrounding the estate itself and includes the oldest vines on the property. Of the two, Le Diable is generally the more powerful wine, but it never seems to lack elegance. There is also an interesting barrel-fermented rosé produced as Vin de France.
LEARN MORE:
-
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION: extreme north of the appellation. Terraces located in places called “Poncet, Thomas, Les Pallières and Terrasse du Diable”. This plot selection comes from vineyards whose altitude is between 250 and 400 m. For the most part, these are independent plots of small size and surrounded by woods.
-
AREA: the estate has 135 ha in one piece, 25 of which are planted with vines and 110 with wood (pines and oaks). For the “Terrasse du Diable” blend, around 40% of the surface area of the vineyard is used.
-
SOIL AND BASEMENT: the estate is cultivated in stepped terraces over most of the surface, due to the very steep terrain. The ground, partly covered with limestone scree from the Dentelles de Montmirail, is very shallow and rests on a layer of very compact red clay. The density of scree increases with altitude.
-
GRAPES: grenache noir 90%, mourvèdre 5%, clairette 5%.
-
AGE OF VINES: 45 years on average.
-
VINIFICATION: manual harvest with double sorting in the vineyard, followed by a third sorting in the cellar, light crushing and selective destemming, traditional fermentation for 25 to 30 days in concrete vats and wooden vats under controlled temperatures. Pressing in a pneumatic press, systematic malolactic fermentation.
-
AGEING: 20 months in 60 hectoliter French oak barrels. Bottling without fining or filtration.
-
PERSONALITY AND AGING: in its youth, the “Terrasse du Diable” vintage carries with it the minerality, freshness and sometimes too marked tannins of high-altitude terroirs. Fine vintages have a potential of more than 20 years.
-
TASTING TEMPERATURE: 17°C.
