The Vosne-Romanée is a French wine of Burgundy. Vosne-Romanée is a small commune of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, known mainly for its red wine made from the Pinot Noir grape variety. Originally named just Vosne, the village took the suffix Romanée in 1866 in honour of its most prized vineyard, La Romanée. It is often grouped together with the neighbouring commune of Flagey-Echézeaux; although the villages are entirely separate, their most beautiful vineyards are grouped together immediately north of Vosne-Romanée.
The classic Vosne-Romanée wine is considered by many to have a perfect balance between weight, structure, elegance and longevity. Tasting notes often refer to a combination of tart red fruits (notably cherries and raspberries) and darker elements of undergrowth, liquorice and smoke.
The village has been a known source of quality wines for more than a thousand years, since the arrival of the monks of the Saint-Vivant monastery. Today, it produces wine almost exclusively from pinot noir, although up to 15% of the local white varieties are allowed, to allow for natural variations and mutations in the plantation. The wines are produced under the Vosne-Romanée appellation (about a third of them come from Premier Cru sites) and six appellations grand cru, each corresponding to a specific vineyard.
The total surface area of the Vosne-Romanée vineyard Grand Cru is only 27 hectares (67 acres - about half the size of the unique climat of the Clos de Vougeot on the other side of the commune). It is divided into six climats: La Grand Rue, La Tâche, Richebourg, La Romanée, La Romanée-Saint-Vivant and the most famous, Romanée-Conti. In spite of this small surface area, the Vosne-Romanée red wines Grand Cru are among the most respected (and cherished) in the world.
The best vineyards of Vosne-Romanée are located just above the village, on the average slopes of the Côte d'Or; it is here that you will find the sites of grands crus. Around these prestigious sites are the Vosne-Romanée vineyards Premier Cru and entirely unclassified lands. The difference between a vine grand cru and a vine considered worthy only of the regional appellation of Burgundy is sometimes just a few vine stocks.
For lack of being able to afford a grand cru, it is possible to fall back on some excellent premiers crus, including: Les Suchots, Les Malconsorts, Le Clos des Réas or Les Gaudichots.
