In the municipalities of Kientzheim and Sigolsheim, between 300 and 400 m above sea level, the brown, calcareous soils of the Furstentum have a shallow, filtering, stony structure with outcrops of bedrock. These are marly-calcareous sandstone terroirs of the Lower Dogger (secondary era) partially covered by tertiary conglomerates. The marl brings power and structure; the sandstone brings elegance, nervousness and complexity.
Facing south, its summit is an island of calciphile Mediterranean vegetation. The slope is significant, it optimizes the sunshine on a soil that accumulates heat and water.
The Furstentum is mentioned in 1330 in the inventory of the vineyards belonging to the convent of Basel. The Furstentum favours superb ripening in the Gewurztraminer of the Weinbach. They draw from it a remarkable aromatic complexity, great finesse and a long ageing potential.
