The oldest grand cru in Alsace
On a granitic mother rock (migmatites), the soils are sandy, rich in mineral elements, shallow at the top of the hill (400 m altitude), deeper at the bottom (230 m). The richness and diversity of the minerals encountered (potassium, magnesium, fluorine, phosphorus) determine the finesse and multiplicity of the aromas of its wines. With its steep south-facing slopes, the Schlossberg requires cultivation on terraces.
It is a very famous locality and its quality was recognised as early as the 15th century. It is the first Alsace terroir to be classified as a "Terroir d'Alsace" Grand Cru by the decree of 1975. From 1928, the winegrowers of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim had set down all the natural production constraints for this cru in a written agreement, unanimously respected, which has since been enshrined in the decrees recognising the grands crus.
Excellent granitic soil
The Schlossberg is an exceptional terroir for Riesling to which it gives a very pure fruity expression, a remarkable breed and finesse.
Most of the Riesling of the Domaine are from the Schlossberg, except for the Riesling Cuvée Théo, born in the Clos des Capucins.
The Schlossberg vintages, lively and elegant, come from the upper part of the hillside, with shallow soils. The Cuvée Sainte Catherine comes from the lower part of the hillside, giving fuller, fatter wines.
The Riesling Schlossberg Cuvée Sainte Catherine and " L'Inédit ! ", made from 60 year old vines situated halfway up the slope, illustrate all the splendour of this terroir.
